FACEBOOK IS THE PREFERRED NETWORK FOR VIDEO SHARING

There’s been a great deal up upheaval in the social video sector in recent years. With the rise of mobile apps like Periscope, live streaming broke into the mainstream, and Facebook is starting to edge out YouTube in terms of content. A small study from digital production agency Philo Media examines how attitudes toward online video are still in flux.

Overall video viewing is on the rise, but 31.96 percent of the 466 survey respondents reported watching 15 minutes or less per day on mobile. Millennials reported watching one to two hours of video daily on mobile devices, 10.73 percent more than baby boomers.

FACEBOOK BRINGING 360 PHOTOS TO NEWS FEED, SAMSUNG GEAR VR

360-degree photos are coming to Facebook’s News Feed and the Samsung Gear VR.

Facebook-owned virtual reality company Oculus VR announced in a blog post that the feature will launch “in the coming weeks,” writing: 

In the coming weeks, Facebook will add 360 photos to News Feed. You’ll be able to take a panoramic photo from your phone or use a 360 camera, upload it to Facebook and pan around by tilting your phone or dragging the 

image.

FACEBOOK CURATOR VS. UNBIASED NEWS SURFACING

Anonymous sources recently claimed that Facebook’s Trending Topics may not be as algorithm-driven as believed. Facebook strongly denied the allegations, but are the algorithms receiving help from curators to surface topics in the Trending box? With so many people getting their news from Facebook, is it ethical to emphasize or devalue certain news in the trending topics?

Citing anonymous former Facebook employees, Gizmodo reported that the trending box was manipulated to suppress conservative content. Additionally the sources alleged that they were instructed to insert topics into Trending because they came from major news organizations, and not because they were naturally trending.

FACEBOOK LAUNCHES DISCOVER FEATURE FOR GROUPS

Facebook announced during its earnings call for the fourth quarter of 2015 and the full year that more than 1 billion people use groups each month, and the social network is testing steps to make those groups easier to find.

UPDATE: Facebook confirmed in an email to SocialTimes Thursday afternoon that its new Discover tool for groups is now available to all U.S. users via iOS, Android and the social network’s mobile site.
